Definitions
Qualitative Data: Qualitative data is data which isnt measured by unit such as the roundness of a pebble.
Secondary Data: Data which has been collected by someone other than yourself ie. the width of a beach on a map
Random Data: Random data is a method of selecting a sample (a random sample) from a statistical population in such a way that every possible sample that could be selected has a predetermined probability of being selected.
Stratified Data: Stratified data refers to a type of
sampling method. The researcher divides the population into separate groups, called strata.Systematic Data: Systematic data is a data collection in regular intervals. For example, measuring the gradient of the beach every 3m.
Transect: A transect is a line along which data is collected. Data such as the gradient of a beach can be collected along a beach at-for example-3m intervals
How we measured our data on our field trip: On our trip, we collected data for the angle of the beach along a transect (see above) every 3m. We also measured the average volume of 4 rocks picked randomly using a jug filled with 1 litre of water. To measure the gradient we used a gun clinometer , which gave us the degree the beach had gone up or down by. We did this every 3m, and then we had our gradient.
Null hypothesis: The longshore drift does NOT move from west to east
Our Results: Our results concluded that longshore drift moved from east to west. This made us conclude that our null hypothesis was indeed incorrect
